I’ve put together a little homelab using an old Surface laptop, which now quietly runs as a server in the corner. I use it to host Minecraft and a handful of other game servers, so whenever friends want to play we’ve got somewhere to do it without paying monthly for a dedicated host — the spare hardware does the job perfectly well. It started as a way to save a bit of money, but it’s turned into a proper tinkering project in its own right: managing the servers, keeping them online, and squeezing usable performance out of a laptop that was never meant for the job.
